How to Use Confiteor
Confiteor is available as a browser-based web tool at Prepare. It provides a three-stage flow — examination, sin review, and confessional walkthrough — and everything stays on your device. Mobile apps (Android and iOS) are currently in development.

How to use Confession Prep
Open the Confession Prep page. You will see three panels: Examen, Sins, and Walkthrough. On mobile you can swipe horizontally between panels; on desktop use the tab buttons at the top.
- On the Examen panel, use the Examination Questions dropdown to select a set. Questions are grouped by section. Tap a section header to expand or collapse it.
- Check any question that applies to you. A sin label input and a count control will appear. Edit the label if needed and use + / − to set how many times the sin was committed.
- If you decrement the count below 1, the control collapses and the question is deselected.
- To add a sin that is not in the examination questions, tap Add a sin to my list at the bottom of the Examen panel, type a brief description, and tap Add.
- Switch to the Sins panel to review your recorded sins, grouped by label. Sins added to your list appear in a separate My List section with a delete icon on each entry. Use Print Sins List to print a clean copy.
- Switch to the Walkthrough panel to see a full review organized by question set and section. Use Print Walkthrough to print it.
- Use Clear All on the Sins panel to erase your draft and start over.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Confession Prep tool private and secure?
Yes. The tool is designed with privacy as a core requirement:
- Nothing is sent to any server. Your selected questions, sin labels, and counts never leave your browser.
- No account or login is required. The tool works entirely in your browser without sign-in.
- Data is stored encrypted. Your draft is encrypted (AES-GCM 256-bit) before being written to your browser's local storage. The encryption key is stored in IndexedDB, which browsers do not sync across devices. Even if your local storage were synchronised to another device via a cloud service, the data could not be decrypted there — only the original device and browser hold the key.
- No analytics on your confession data. We do not track which questions you select or what you type.
- Printing is local. Print actions use your browser's native print function; no data is transmitted.
How do I clear my Confession Prep draft?
Tap Clear All on the Sins panel to erase all recorded selections. You can also clear the draft by clearing your browser's site data for this website in your browser settings.
Does the web tool restore my selections after I close the browser?
Yes. Your draft is saved automatically in your browser's local storage as you work. When you return to the Confession Prep page, your previous selections are restored. This works as long as you have not cleared your browser's site data or used the "Clear All" button.
How do I manage the Examination Questions list?
The Examination Questions dropdown is populated from Examen modules marked as Favorites in the Examen library. To add a question set, visit the Examen library and click Add to Favorites on that module. To remove it, click Favorite again to un-favorite it. Your favorites are saved in your browser and remembered on future visits.
What does the Walkthrough tab do?
The Walkthrough tab is designed to be used inside the confessional. It shows your list of sins and guides you step-by-step through the Rite of Penance.
How do I add a sin that is not in the examination questions?
Tap Add a sin to my list at the bottom of the Examen panel. Type a brief description and tap Add. The sin will appear in the My List section of the Sins panel.
What do 'state in life' options mean?
Different states of life carry additional moral responsibilities. For example, a Parent bears duties toward their children that a Single Adult does not. Selecting your state shows questions tailored to your situation beyond the universal Ten Commandments.
What is the difference between Standard and Comprehensive?
Those names refer to different Examen modules when they are available in the library. A standard examination is usually organized around common confession-preparation categories such as the Ten Commandments, precepts of the Church, and capital sins. A comprehensive module is usually longer and more detailed. You can favorite one or more modules and choose among them in the Examination Questions dropdown.
What are Examination of Conscience Modules?
Examination of Conscience modules are Markdown-based sets of examination questions. On the website, approved modules appear in the Examen library, where you can preview, download, and mark favorites for Confession Prep. You can also build a Markdown module with the Examen Builder and submit it for review.
How do I use the Examen Builder?
Open the Examen Builder page and start with Module Info: add the module name, producer, and any optional details such as a description, accent color, source URL, or Monthly Examen. Then add one or more Sections and complete the current section fields — category, framework, optional examination type, month, scripture, and section description — before adding Questions with both question text and matching confession text. When everything is ready, use the Submit for Consideration form to send it to the public Examen library. See How to Build an Examen Module for the full step-by-step builder guide.
Can I save my Examen Builder work and come back to it later?
Yes. The Examen Builder supports named local drafts saved in your browser. In the Submit for Consideration section, type a name in the Draft name field and click Save draft on this device. You can store multiple named drafts. To reload a draft, choose it from the Saved drafts dropdown and click Load saved draft. Drafts are stored only in your browser's local storage — they are not sent to any server and are not shared across devices.
Can I import an existing examination from a URL into the builder?
Yes. The Import from URL section at the top of the Examen Builder lets you paste a link to a PDF or web page. Click Fetch & preview to load the text. In the preview, highlight any text and click a role button — Title, Author / Producer, Section, or Question — to classify it. Keyboard shortcuts T, A, S, Q, and X also work. Once you have classified the content, click Apply to builder to populate the form. The imported text is not stored on any server.
